Classical House in Kentucky

When our firm was commissioned to design a new Kentucky house on a site literally on the Mason-Dixon line, we allowed ourselves to stretch beyond the architectural boundaries of the South, introducing subtle hints and references to Mid-Atlantic and even New England inspiration.

The exterior is a conscious and playful mix of formal and informal detailing, where Greek Revival influences are tempered by delicate trelliage. The warmth of a wood-shingled gambrel roof softens the crisp white of classical gables and pediments. On the inside, a loose, rambling arrangement of rooms and spaces prevents the house from giving away its secrets immediately upon entering the front door. We blurred the lines and embraced circulation between public and back-of-house spaces, imbuing a casualness and livability that speaks to an elegantly relaxed lifestyle.
